Super Falcons Soar to Victory: Nigeria Thrash Tunisia 3-0 in WAFCON Opener

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have kicked off their quest for a record-extending tenth WAFCON title with a commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their Group B opener. The match, played at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, showcased the gulf in quality between the two sides, with Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo scoring the goals that sealed the win.

A Thrilling Start

The match began on a high note for Nigeria, with Asisat Oshoala scoring her 14th career goal at the WAFCON just four minutes into the game. Rinsola Babajide was fouled on the left, and her precise free-kick into the box found Oshoala, who directed a well-timed header into the centre of the goal.

Babajide’s Stunning Strike

Nigeria’s second goal came at the end of a lengthy first-half stoppage period, with Rinsola Babajide scoring a well-taken left-footed effort in the 46th minute. The goal was confirmed after a VAR check for offside, and it underlined Nigeria’s dominance on the pitch.

Ihezuo’s Clinical Finish

The third goal arrived in the 84th minute, with Chinwendu Ihezuo scoring a left-footed shot that settled low in the far corner. Esther Okoronkwo received Plumptre’s cross in the box and flicked the ball perfectly to Ihezuo’s position, setting up the clinical finish.

Tunisia’s Goal Drought

The Carthage Eagles have now gone five consecutive WAFCON matches without scoring, stretching over 460 minutes, and remain without a goal against Nigeria in the competition’s history. Despite some late pressure, Tunisia’s best opportunity came in stoppage time when Salma Zemzem rattled the crossbar from a distance, a rare moment of danger for Nigeria.

What’s Next for the Super Falcons?

The win sets Nigeria atop Group B heading into their next match against Botswana, while Tunisia will be looking to bounce back against Algeria. Can the Super Falcons continue their dominance and bring home the coveted WAFCON title?
