The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a decisive victory in the Rivers State local government elections held on Saturday, claiming 20 out of the 23 chairmanship seats across the state.
The announcement was made by Dr. Michael Odey, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), during a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on Sunday afternoon. According to Odey, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victories in three LGAs—Obio/Akpor, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Port Harcourt City (PHALGA).
A breakdown of results shows APC candidates emerging victorious in key areas including Abua/Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Akuku Toru, Andoni, Asari Toru, Bonny, Degema, Eleme, Emohua, Etche, Gokana, Ikwerre, Khana, Ogu/Bolo, Okrika, Omuma, Opobo/Nkoro, Oyigbo, and Tai.
Following the announcement, RSIEC issued Certificates of Return to the 23 chairpersons-elect and 319 ward councillors who emerged winners of the August 30, 2025, council polls.
Speaking during the presentation, Odey described the moment as a proud milestone for Nigeria’s democratic journey. He cautioned the elected officials to see the certificate not merely as proof of victory but as a mandate for responsible governance. He emphasized that humility, accountability, and transparency must guide their leadership, stressing that a “winner-takes-all” approach has no place in grassroots politics.
The RSIEC chairman further acknowledged the contributions of security agencies, civil society organisations, community leaders, and the media in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process. He also encouraged dissatisfied candidates to seek redress through lawful channels and assured that the commission would undertake a post-election review to improve future electoral exercises.
This outcome further cements APC’s dominance in Rivers State’s local political landscape, setting the stage for governance at the grassroots level in the coming years.
