Something historic is unfolding in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State. Mayor Hon. Chinedu Ekeke is not only planting crops—he is planting the foundation for a new agricultural economy. With a 50-hectare cassava project underway, Isuikwuato is positioning itself as the cassava hub of Abia State and a major production center for neighboring states.
From Farmer Training to Massive Cultivation
This ambitious journey began with the training of over 1,500 farmers across the 10 wards of Isuikwuato. Many participants, previously unaware of the vast potential of farming, were introduced to modern agro-practices that can generate sustainable wealth. For these farmers, the cassava project is not just agriculture—it’s an opportunity to transform their livelihoods and pull thousands out of poverty.
After the training, farmlands were cleared and access roads opened using tractors and bulldozers. These farm roads are not only serving the cassava cluster but also boosting accessibility for other farmers in the area. Trucks and motorcycles can now reach farmlands with ease, reducing the stress of transporting inputs and produce, while also stimulating the local transport sector.
Building a Sustainable Economic Ecosystem
With land cleared, planting has commenced on the 50 hectares. Fertilizers will be applied where soils are less fertile, and pest and disease control measures will safeguard the crops. Beyond planting, a network of cassava processing machines will be installed across all wards, ensuring that Isuikwuato’s produce is not just harvested but processed, packaged, and branded—with “Isuikwuato Garri” set to become a household name.
Importantly, every part of the cassava plant will be put to use—from garri and flour to cassava leaves and stems—creating multiple streams of value. The inclusive model ensures that landowners, farmers, and the local government all share in the profits, reinvesting wealth back into the community.
Hon. Chinedu Ekeke’s vision proves that agriculture can do more than feed families—it can build infrastructure, create jobs, and drive economic growth. As the fields grow, so too will the fortunes of Isuikwuato, setting a bold example for all of Abia State.
