Owo Church Massacre: 4 Terror Suspects Convicted, 1 Acquitted By Court

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court has convicted 4 men over the June 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State that left over 40 worshippers dead.

The judge found them guilty on all 9 counts of terrorism under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act. The crimes included membership of Al-Shabab, an ISWAP affiliate, conspiracy to commit terrorism, kidnapping, hostage-taking, and the murder of worshippers during Sunday mass.

However, the court discharged and acquitted the 5th defendant, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, 47, after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove its case against him beyond reasonable doubt.

Gunmen stormed the Owo church on June 5, 2022, opening fire on congregants. The attack drew nationwide outrage, with calls for justice and stronger security at worship centers. The convictions mark a key step in holding the perpetrators accountable.
