Opta has released its first major prediction model for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After running millions of simulations using form, rankings, injuries, and squad depth, one name keeps coming out on top: Spain.
Spain sit at the summit
Opta gives Spain a 16.12% chance of winning it all. That’s the highest of any nation right now.
It makes sense. Luis de la Fuente’s team just tore through Euro 2024 with the youngest squad in the tournament. Yamal, Williams, Pedri, Rodri… that core is only getting better by 2026. Spain blend tiki-taka control with real attacking bite now. Opta’s model loves that balance.

France and England are breathing down their neck

Defending champions and South American power

Brazil at 6.61% is the shocker. Sixth place for the Seleção? Opta isn’t sold yet. The talent is endless Vinícius Jr, Rodrygo, Endrick but consistency and coaching questions are dragging their rating down. If Brazil sort it out, that number jumps fast.
Europe still runs the show
The rest of Opta’s top ten is mostly Europe. Germany at 5.12% are rebuilding under Nagelsmann with home advantage memories still fresh. Netherlands at 3.62% have quality but lack depth.
Norway at 3.51% is basically the Haaland effect. One generational striker can swing a whole model. Belgium drop to 2.37% as the “golden generation” ages out. De Bruyne and Lukaku are still elite, but time isn’t on their side.
What Opta’s model actually means
This isn’t a prophecy. Opta runs millions of simulations based on Elo ratings, player availability, and recent results. It updates constantly. One injury or one hot streak can flip the whole board.
