WAEC exams are turning into night classes for some students. Across Lagos Island and Lekki, candidates are writing WASSCE papers hours late — sometimes finishing close to 10 p.m.
It’s a repeat of last year’s mess, and parents are not happy.
On Monday, Physics Papers 1 & 2 that should have started at 2 p.m. only got going much later. Some students didn’t finish Paper 2 until 8 p.m. Then on Wednesday, General Maths candidates sat from 9:30 a.m. till almost 10 p.m. because both essay and objective papers were delayed. By Thursday evening, Agricultural Science Practical students were still waiting for materials.
A principal who didn’t want his name used said it’s frustrating: “We had this same problem last year. Students prepare for noon, then end up writing at 7 p.m. or later. The stress is too much, plus safety is a problem at night.”
Parents in Lekki say their kids are getting home late, tired and stressed. On social media, people are complaining about missing papers, late supervisors, and even schools charging for maths sets during the exam.
WAEC admits there are “hitches due to unforeseen circumstances” and says they’re working to fix it. But no official statement yet. Stakeholders are now asking WAEC to explain what’s really going on and make sure this doesn’t happen again.
