The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oyigbo Division, Ugochukwu Ijeoma, following allegations of extortion and abuse of office contained in a viral video.
The decision came after anti-police brutality activist Harrison Gwamnishu publicly accused the officer of misconduct involving extortion and the handling of a domestic violence case.
Police Command Confirms Removal
In a statement issued by the Rivers State Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Blessing Agabe, the command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police had directed the immediate removal of the DPO from his position.
The command stated that the action was taken in response to the allegations circulating online and forms part of efforts to ensure accountability within the police force.
Extortion Allegation Raises Concern
In the viral video, Gwamnishu alleged that the DPO collected ₦500,000 from a suspect following a police raid.
According to the activist, several individuals arrested during the operation were allegedly required to pay money to secure their release, with the funds reportedly transferred into the officer’s personal account.
He further claimed that the money was later refunded after pressure was mounted on the officer.
Domestic Violence Case Sparks Outrage
Beyond the extortion allegation, Gwamnishu also accused the officer of mishandling a domestic violence complaint involving a woman identified as Mrs. Njideka Okorieocha.
According to the activist, the woman had reportedly left her husband due to alleged abuse and had earlier reported the matter to the police.
He alleged that instead of investigating the domestic violence complaint, the DPO arrested the woman after a complaint was made by her husband.
The activist further claimed that the woman was charged to court over allegations relating to the custody of her children, while no action was allegedly taken regarding the reported domestic violence incident.
Calls for Accountability
The allegations have generated reactions on social media, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the claims.
Observers say the case highlights ongoing concerns about police accountability, abuse of office, and the handling of domestic violence complaints in parts of the country.
The Rivers State Police Command has yet to provide further details on any disciplinary or investigative measures beyond the removal of the officer from his position.
