Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed reports claiming that she filed for divorce from her husband.
Reacting in a post on X on Thursday, Uchechi mocked an online report alleging that she had ended her marriage because of “years of alleged infidelity and neglect.”
“Good conscious evening, my blessed Biafrans.
“I have just learned that I filed for divorce while my husband is in prison,” she wrote, accompanied by several laughing emojis.
Her response comes amid the circulation of social media reports alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings against the detained IPOB leader.
Nnamdi Kanu is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025 on terrorism-related charges.
Justice James Omotosho found Kanu guilty on all seven counts filed against him.
The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five and six, 20 years’ imprisonment on count three, and five years on count seven, with all sentences ordered to run concurrently.
In delivering judgment, the court held that Kanu’s broadcasts and directives to IPOB members incited violent attacks on security personnel and civilians in Nigeria’s South-East.
Although the prosecution sought the death penalty, the court declined the request, stating that it was tempering justice with mercy while noting the growing global opposition to capital punishment.
Kanu has since challenged the judgment. On February 4, 2026, he filed a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn both his conviction and life sentence.
