Spain have climbed to the summit of world football in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings following their triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Nigeria remain 26th globally despite slipping to fourth place in Africa.
The updated rankings, released on Monday following the conclusion of the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, reflect the major changes brought about by the month-long tournament.
Spain Reclaim World No. 1
La Roja dethroned defending champions Argentina after defeating them 1-0 in extra time in the World Cup final, courtesy of Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute winner.
The victory earned Spain a significant points boost, taking them to 1,995.88 points and making them the new world number one. It is the first time Spain have topped the FIFA rankings since reclaiming global supremacy with their second World Cup title.
Argentina Slip to Second
Argentina surrendered both their World Cup crown and the top spot in the rankings after losing the final.
Lionel Scaloni’s side finished second with 1,970.37 points after an impressive campaign that included victories over Egypt and England on their route to the final.
France, England and Brazil Complete Top Five
France maintained third place with 1,948.97 points despite their defeat to England in the third-place playoff.
England remained fourth after defeating France 6-4 in a thrilling encounter to secure their best World Cup finish since winning the tournament in 1966.
Brazil climbed to fifth place despite suffering a surprise defeat to Norway late in the competition.
Morocco Lead Africa, Nigeria Fourth
Morocco retained their status as Africa’s highest-ranked nation after another outstanding World Cup campaign, climbing to sixth place globally with 1,803.99 points.
Egypt also enjoyed a significant rise after reaching the Round of 16, overtaking Nigeria on the continental rankings.
The Super Eagles remain 26th in the world but are now fourth in Africa following Egypt’s impressive performances at the tournament.
Norway and Mexico Among Biggest Movers
Norway recorded one of the biggest jumps in the rankings after a memorable World Cup campaign that included a shock victory over Brazil. The Scandinavians climbed 12 places to 19th in the world.
Mexico also broke into the global top 10 after moving up four places to occupy 10th position, pushing Germany and Italy out of the elite group.
Germany and Italy Drop Out of Top 10
Germany slipped to 12th with 1,726.22 points, while Italy dropped to 15th with 1,704.73 points after both nations lost ground during the World Cup rankings cycle.
Colombia climbed to 11th following an impressive tournament, while Croatia settled in 13th place.
