The Federal Government has partnered with Meta, the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) to establish an artificial intelligence academy aimed at developing Nigeria’s AI talent and strengthening the country’s technology ecosystem.
The initiative is being led by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in collaboration with the participating technology and skills-development organisations.
According to Meta, the academy is designed to move participants beyond basic awareness of artificial intelligence towards practical applications, giving developers, entrepreneurs and young professionals opportunities to acquire technical skills and develop AI-powered solutions.
The programme will combine training, technical support and opportunities for participants to develop and commercialise technology products.
The initiative comes as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its position within Africa’s growing digital economy by developing a larger pool of technology professionals capable of working with emerging technologies.
Three-Part Programme
The AI academy will operate through three main components: AI skills development, an AI Startup Pitchathon and a six-week Developer Bootcamp.
The skills development component will be available to the wider 3MTT community and will cover several areas of artificial intelligence.
Participants will receive training in generative AI, prompt engineering, multimodal AI, data analytics and application development using Meta’s Llama models.
The courses will be delivered through online learning platforms including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp, with participants accessing the training at no cost.
The programme is also designed to reward high-performing participants.
The top 100 performers will be eligible for scholarships towards Meta Blueprint certifications and could receive advertising credits of up to $5,000.
The opportunities are intended to give participants access not only to technical knowledge but also to additional resources that could support their professional development and entrepreneurial activities.
Government Focuses on Practical AI Skills
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the partnership was designed to equip developers, entrepreneurs and young professionals with practical AI skills while creating opportunities for innovation and the development of globally competitive startups.
The minister described the initiative as part of the government’s broader efforts to build Nigeria’s AI ecosystem through public-private partnerships.
He said the collaboration reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s position in Africa’s digital economy.
The focus on practical skills is particularly significant as AI adoption expands across different sectors.
Beyond understanding how artificial intelligence works, businesses increasingly require professionals who can develop, deploy and integrate AI-powered tools into real-world operations.
The academy’s structure is therefore aimed at connecting training with product development and commercial opportunities.
AI Startup Pitchathon
The programme will also target Nigeria’s growing startup ecosystem through an AI Startup Pitchathon.
Applications for the pitchathon close on August 21, with 10 startups expected to be selected to pitch their solutions at GITEX Nigeria on September 3.
Two winning startups will each receive $5,000 in cash funding and $2,000 in Meta advertising credits.
The winners will also receive an opportunity to represent Nigeria at Meta’s AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November, with the trip provided on an all-expenses-paid basis.
The pitchathon provides an additional pathway for Nigerian startups working with artificial intelligence to gain exposure, funding and access to international technology networks.
For emerging founders, the combination of financial support, advertising credits and international exposure could help promising AI products move closer to commercial deployment.
Six-Week Developer Bootcamp
The third component of the academy will be a six-week Developer Bootcamp delivered by Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN).
The bootcamp will provide selected developers and startups with intensive practical training focused on building functional AI products and market-ready solutions.
Participants will receive technical guidance and access to Meta’s AI experts as they work through the product development process.
The approach is intended to move participants from learning concepts to actually building technology products that can potentially address real-world problems.
RAIN Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Olushola Ayoola, said the partnership demonstrated the importance of coordinated efforts in building Nigeria’s AI capabilities.
“Building Nigeria’s AI capacity requires the kind of coordinated effort we are seeing here,” Ayoola said.
The involvement of RAIN also adds a local technical training component to the programme, connecting international technology expertise with Nigeria’s growing developer community.
Meta Sees Opportunity in Nigerian Talent
Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa, Sade Dada, said Nigeria has some of Africa’s most dynamic AI talent but noted that developers and founders need greater access to practical training, funding and platforms to develop impactful solutions.

The programme’s combination of free online courses, certification opportunities, startup funding and intensive product development is designed to address several stages of the technology development pipeline.

Nigeria has a large and growing technology community, with young developers, entrepreneurs and professionals increasingly exploring artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
However, access to advanced training, development resources and funding remains an important challenge for many early-stage innovators.
