Abia Begins Enforcement of Centralised Transport System in Umuahia

The Abia State Government has commenced the enforcement phase of its new centralised transport system in Umuahia, with transport operators gradually relocating their activities to the newly established Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal.

The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader transportation reform agenda aimed at improving orderliness, safety, and efficiency within the transport sector.

Government Announces Full Commencement of Operations

Speaking at the Government House in Umuahia after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, confirmed that full operations have commenced at the terminal.

According to him, the government spent considerable time engaging transport stakeholders and unions before the commencement of enforcement, ensuring that their concerns were carefully considered.

He explained that the relocation process has already seen informal transport operators and unions move into the facility, despite the initial resistance often associated with major reforms.

Phased Implementation of the New System

The state government disclosed that the transport reform is being implemented in phases to ensure a smooth transition.

According to officials, the first phase involves the operations of the Abia Green Shuttle buses, while the second phase focuses on informal transport operators.

The final phase will cover formal transport operators, completing the transition to the centralized system.

Government officials noted that enforcement measures have now commenced to ensure all transport operators comply with the new arrangement.

Government Addresses Stakeholders’ Concerns

The Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, emphasized that the government is not taking away anyone’s source of livelihood but rather creating a more organized and efficient transport environment.

He revealed that transport unions and operators were encouraged to nominate representatives who would be properly identified and integrated into the operations of the terminal.

According to him, continuous engagement remains ongoing with operators who are yet to fully embrace the initiative.

Transparent Operations at the Bus Terminal

Dr. Ukaegbu explained that the terminal operates a transparent loading system based on a first-come, first-served principle, regardless of union affiliation.

He stated that the arrangement ensures fairness among operators and eliminates many of the disputes commonly associated with transport park operations.

According to the commissioner, between 80 and 90 percent of transport operators have already accepted the new system.

The government expects compliance levels to increase further as discussions continue with remaining stakeholders.

Improved Facilities for Drivers and Passengers

Officials highlighted several facilities provided at the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal to enhance the transportation experience.

The terminal features a dedicated drivers’ lodge equipped with air-conditioning and seating facilities, while passengers also have access to a comfortable and secure waiting environment.

According to the Commissioner for Transport, the facility was designed to meet modern transportation standards and improve service delivery across the sector.

He described the terminal as a major step toward creating a more professional and organized transport system in the state.

Expected Benefits of the Reform

Also speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, outlined several benefits expected from the centralization policy.

According to him, the initiative will help reduce traffic congestion, eliminate indiscriminate loading points, improve security, and create a more regulated transport environment.

He further noted that transport operators stand to benefit from reduced operational expenses associated with maintaining multiple loading bays across the city.

Driving Urban Development and Orderliness

The state government believes the centralized transport system will contribute significantly to urban planning and development within Umuahia.

Officials argue that the policy will not only improve transportation services but also promote public safety, environmental cleanliness, and ease of movement for residents and visitors.

The Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal is expected to serve as a central hub for transportation activities while supporting the administration’s broader vision for modern infrastructure and sustainable urban development across Abia State.
