Abia State has become home to Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod), marking a significant milestone in the country’s drive to promote innovation, industrialisation and technology-driven economic growth.
The facility was officially inaugurated on Monday at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), through a collaborative initiative involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Abia State Government.
Speaking during the inauguration, Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, described the project as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning higher education as a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship, research commercialisation and job creation.
He said universities must evolve beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to become centres for enterprise development, technology transfer and industrial competitiveness.
“This initiative represents far more than the commissioning of another university facility,” he said.
“It is the unveiling of a broad national vision that positions our universities as agents of industrial transformation, innovation, enterprise creation and sustainable economic development.”
The Vice President also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to building an education system that develops talent, accelerates industrialisation and contributes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of growing Nigeria into a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2030.
Delivering the keynote address titled Science Meets Enterprise, Governor Alex Otti said the decision to establish the innovation hub in Abia reflects the confidence that both the Federal Government and UNDP have in the state’s capacity to become a leading centre for industrial growth and economic prosperity.
According to the governor, the project demonstrates the growing recognition of Abia as a destination for innovation-driven development.
United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa, described the Innovation Pod as a transformative platform designed to unlock the creativity and innovative potential of Africa’s young people.
“This Innovation Pod is more than a physical space. It is a commitment to unlock the creative and innovative potential of Africa’s youth,” she said.
“Here, engineering meets art. Business meets social enterprise. The boundaries between disciplines dissolve. Here, failure is a critical step in innovation, and diversity of thought is our greatest asset.”
Also speaking, UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, described the inauguration as another milestone in Nigeria’s growing innovation ecosystem.
She explained that the project aligns with the vision of positioning Abia as Nigeria’s leading hub for innovation-driven industrial transformation.
Attafuah also acknowledged TETFund’s role in supporting strategic infrastructure across Nigerian universities and disclosed that UNDP is mobilising one billion US dollars to build Africa’s largest innovation ecosystem.
According to her, the initiative aims to support 10,000 startups, help 1,000 high-growth businesses scale, improve the livelihoods of more than 100 million people and generate 10 billion US dollars in economic value across the continent over the next decade.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Professor Ursala Akanwa, described the commissioning as a defining moment in the institution’s history.
She said the innovation hub represents the fulfilment of the university’s mandate to deploy science, technology and innovation in advancing agriculture, manufacturing and enterprise development.
The Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod is expected to serve as a centre for research, innovation, entrepreneurship and skills development, strengthening collaboration between academia, industry and government while preparing young Nigerians to drive the country’s industrial transformation.
