Abia Launches Startup Investors Network To Boost Local Funding
The Abia State Government has unveiled the Abia Startup Investors Network (ASIN), a private-sector-led platform designed to connect promising startups with investors and expand access to local capital.
The network was launched on Wednesday, August 26, during the Abia Startup and Angel Investment Summit held at the main auditorium of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba.
The summit, themed “Unlocking Local Capital for High-Growth Startups,” was organised as part of activities marking the 35th anniversary of the creation of Abia State and reflects the government’s growing emphasis on technology, innovation and entrepreneurship as drivers of economic development.
ASIN is designed to provide investors with access to credible startup opportunities while allowing members to participate in investments on a deal-by-deal basis.
The initiative brings together entrepreneurs, private investors, professionals and other stakeholders within the business and technology ecosystem, with the broader objective of strengthening the relationship between startups and sources of capital.
Connecting Abia’s Entrepreneurs With Capital
Speaking at the summit, David Kalu, Abia State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, described the initiative as an important step towards connecting the state’s entrepreneurial capacity with the capital, expertise and networks needed to build scalable businesses.
Kalu said Abia has a long-standing culture of enterprise but needs to increasingly connect that entrepreneurial strength with technology, innovation and investment.
“Abia has always been known for enterprise. The opportunity before us is to connect that entrepreneurial strength with innovation, technology and investment.”
He added that while government would continue to provide an enabling environment, a sustainable startup ecosystem requires collaboration between entrepreneurs, private capital, industry and government.
The launch therefore places private-sector participation at the centre of efforts to develop Abia’s emerging startup ecosystem.
Building A Community Of Local Investors
Uche Aniche, Lead Organiser of the Abia Startup and Angel Investment Summit and convener of StartupSouth, said the long-term objective was to build a community of informed local investors capable of identifying and backing promising founders.
According to Aniche, Abia already has successful businesspeople, professionals and members of the diaspora with capital, experience and useful networks that could be connected to entrepreneurs seeking to scale their businesses.
He said the state should not have to rely exclusively on investors from major international technology and financial centres to provide early-stage funding for local startups.
“We should not have to wait for all early-stage capital to come from Lagos, London or Silicon Valley.”
Aniche said Abia could build a credible community of local investors who understand opportunities within the state and are willing to support strong founders on a deal-by-deal basis.
More Than An Investment Platform
ASIN is expected to go beyond simply connecting startups with investors.
The network will provide opportunities for investor education, startup discovery, opportunity evaluation and collective participation in investment opportunities.
The platform is also expected to deepen relationships between founders and private capital both within Abia and outside the state.
Aniche said additional investor education and engagement sessions would continue virtually after the summit for interested participants.
The approach is intended to help prospective investors better understand early-stage businesses, evaluate investment opportunities and make informed decisions when considering participation in startup deals.
Supporting Abia’s Startup Ecosystem
The launch of ASIN comes as the Abia State Government continues to position technology and innovation as important components of its economic development strategy.
The initiative also complements ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s startup ecosystem, including the domestication of the Nigeria Startup Act and other measures aimed at improving access to support, capital and opportunities for innovation-driven businesses.
The summit itself brought together discussions on angel investing, Abia’s investment opportunities and interactions with selected founders, alongside contributions from leaders within the technology and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
ASIN was launched with support from the Abia Technology and Innovation Network (ATIN) and other ecosystem stakeholders.
Creating More Opportunities For Founders
For startups operating in Abia, access to capital remains an important part of the challenge of moving from early-stage operations to scalable businesses.
The new investor network seeks to address part of that gap by creating a more structured relationship between entrepreneurs and people with the financial resources, business experience and networks required to support growth.
By encouraging local investors to participate in the startup ecosystem, the initiative could also help create a stronger cycle in which capital generated within the state is channeled into new businesses and innovations.
The government maintains that its role is to create the conditions that allow entrepreneurs and private investors to operate, while the private sector provides the capital and expertise required to build sustainable businesses.
The launch of ASIN therefore represents an attempt to bring these different parts of the ecosystem closer together.
With Abia increasingly promoting technology, entrepreneurship and innovation as engines of economic growth, the success of the network will depend on its ability to turn investor interest into actual funding, mentorship and long-term relationships with founders.
For entrepreneurs, the platform could provide another route to capital beyond traditional funding sources, while investors could gain greater visibility into businesses emerging from the state’s growing technology and enterprise ecosystem.
