The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abia State Command, has deployed newly acquired high-tech equipment to strengthen surveillance, intelligence gathering and operational response across the state.
The deployment is part of efforts by the command to improve its operational capacity and strengthen technology-driven security operations in Abia State.
The State Commandant, Commandant Chukwuemeka N. Odimba, disclosed this on Wednesday while flagging off the distribution of the second batch of the equipment to personnel at the command headquarters in Umuahia.
Odimba charged officers and men of the Corps to make maximum use of the equipment, stressing that the investment was intended to improve operational efficiency and enable personnel to gather and share intelligence in real time.
According to the commandant, the deployment followed a five-day Strategic Capacity Building Workshop on Technological Advancement in Security Management, sponsored by the Abia State Government.
He said combining specialised training with modern crime-fighting equipment would position the Corps to carry out more effective preventive and intelligence-led security operations.
Commandant Tasks Personnel on Maximum Use
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Odimba said the new equipment represented another step towards strengthening the ability of NSCDC personnel to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
He recalled that personnel had recently participated in the five-day strategic capacity-building workshop focused on the application of technology to contemporary security operations.
“Just a few days ago, you all participated in the five-day Strategic Capacity Building Workshop on technological advancement in security management. Today, we have taken a step further to fully equip you to effectively deliver on the Corps’ mandates through the distribution of these high-tech crime-fighting equipment,” he said.
The commandant warned personnel against underutilising the equipment, noting that the acquisition of modern security technology also comes with greater responsibility for officers and men to deliver improved operational results.
“Remember, these equipment are basically to enhance your operations. The present leadership of the Corps has been quite intentional in your capacity development. You have no excuse not to deliver,” Odimba said.
His remarks emphasised the importance of ensuring that investments in equipment and personnel development translate into practical improvements in security operations.
Technology and Training Combined
The deployment comes shortly after the completion of the strategic workshop, which was designed to expose NSCDC personnel to modern approaches to security management and operations.
The command said the combination of training and equipment would help personnel improve their ability to gather intelligence, monitor security situations and respond more effectively to emerging threats.
The emphasis on technology reflects the changing nature of security operations, where timely access to information and the ability to communicate intelligence quickly can play an important role in preventive security.
For the Abia Command, the latest equipment is expected to complement the skills acquired by personnel during the capacity-building programme.
Odimba said the command had put mechanisms in place to ensure that the equipment would be properly deployed, monitored and utilised across the state.
He also said close monitoring would help ensure that resources committed to the acquisition of the equipment were properly utilised and that the Corps’ transition towards technology-driven security operations achieved its intended objectives.
Focus on Preventive Security
Odimba, who assumed office as State Commandant in March 2026, also reiterated the importance of preventive security and effective intelligence gathering.
According to him, early detection and access to useful intelligence are critical to preventing crimes before they escalate.
The newly deployed equipment, he said, would significantly enhance the command’s capacity to achieve that objective.
The focus on intelligence-led operations also places greater emphasis on the ability of personnel to identify potential security threats and share relevant information promptly with the appropriate authorities.
This approach is expected to complement the Corps’ wider responsibilities in protecting lives and property and supporting security across Abia State.
Sixth Capacity-Building Programme
The Abia NSCDC commandant further disclosed that the recently concluded workshop was the sixth in a series of programmes initiated to strengthen the operational capacity of personnel in the state.
The continued focus on capacity building demonstrates the command’s emphasis on improving both the human and technological components of its security operations.
Odimba expressed optimism that the combined investment in human capital development, logistics and technology would translate into improved protection of lives and property across Abia.
He also commended the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for what he described as sustained investment in personnel training, modern equipment and welfare.
The commandant said the leadership of the Corps had remained intentional about improving the capacity of personnel to respond to the demands of modern security operations.
NSCDC Reaffirms Commitment to Safer Abia
The deployment of the equipment represents a further effort by the Abia State Command to strengthen its operational capabilities through technology and improved personnel development.
