Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has unveiled the theme for Carnival Calabar 2026: ‘Rethinking Our Collective Destiny’. The announcement was made Sunday night in Lagos during the inauguration of the carnival’s 21st anniversary edition, which attracted tourism stakeholders, diplomats, cultural enthusiasts, and government officials.
Otu described the theme as more than a slogan, calling it a vision for the future. _“It challenges us to look beyond where we are today and imagine what we can achieve together as a people through culture, tourism and creativity,”_ he said. According to him, the carnival has grown into a global platform that showcases Cross River, creates jobs, and opens opportunities for businesses, artisans, performers, and young people.
New Innovations for 2026
Chairman of the Carnival Calabar Commission, Gabe Onah, said this year’s edition will introduce *online audience voting* to give communities and spectators a bigger stake in the event. The commission is also commercialising carnival products to create jobs and has partnered with creative teams to develop movies inspired by the festival. Digital platforms will stream the event live to global audiences.
Multichoice’s Executive Director, Busola Tejumola, noted that the voting feature will deepen participation and help tell the stories behind the elaborate costumes and cultural heritage.
International endorsements followed. Portuguese Ambassador to Nigeria, Paulo Santos, compared the carnival’s scale and professionalism to global festivals in Europe, Brazil, and the Americas. Tourism promoter Ikechi Uko urged travel agencies to package Cross River for ‘Detty December’, while FTAN President Aliyu Badaki pledged industry support, saying the carnival has become a model for cultural tourism.
With the 21st edition set to expand economic opportunities and global reach, organisers say Carnival Calabar 2026 is about reimagining culture as a driver of growth and unity.
