Agriculture as the Cornerstone of Growth
Throughout history, agriculture has remained the bedrock of thriving societies. Communities that embraced farming not only fed their people but built wealth and long-term prosperity. Today, Umuahia South Local Government Area is charting that same path under the leadership of Hon. Engr. Chinedu Enwereuzo, the Mayor of Umuahia South. His vision is clear: to place agriculture back at the heart of local development, ensuring food security, creating jobs, and empowering the people for economic independence.
Reclaiming the Land for Food and Prosperity
The administration has cultivated more than 10 hectares of fertile land, now producing ginger, garlic, habanero pepper, tomatoes, and groundnuts. A poultry farm has also been established. These projects are more than subsistence efforts — they represent a deliberate strategy to reduce Abia State’s reliance on food imports from other states.
By focusing on locally grown produce, the initiative ensures farmers earn directly from their harvests, youths and women find jobs in farming and distribution, and families access affordable food. It is a cycle of productivity designed to fuel both the stomach and the economy.
Cocoa Farming: A Pathway to Wealth Creation
Perhaps the most ambitious project yet is cocoa cultivation. The Council is planting over 20,000 cocoa seedlings across the LGA, guided by experts from the Cocoa Research Institute who affirm that Umuahia South’s soil is rich and ideal for cocoa.
Globally, cocoa remains one of the most lucrative crops, with raw beans selling between ₦9 million and ₦15 million per ton. This means the seeds planted today could become a long-term revenue stream tomorrow. Beyond cocoa farming, the vision extends to processing — setting the stage for local factories that will create industries, jobs, and new sources of revenue for the Local Government.
Empowering Farmers, Youths, and Women
Mayor Enwereuzo’s approach goes beyond farming. In June 2025, the Council hosted a two-day Agricultural Exhibition that brought together farmers, youths, women, and key stakeholders. Attendees received training on mechanized farming, irrigation methods, and modern planting techniques. They also went home with improved seedlings, fertilizers, and hybrid palm plants — practical tools to boost productivity.
This empowerment drive is breathing new life into the community. Farmers are motivated to expand, young people see agriculture as a viable career path, and women are finding opportunities in agribusiness and value chain development.
Reviving Institutions for Sustainability
The Agric Department of Umuahia South Council, once dormant, has been reactivated and strengthened. New ad-hoc staff have been employed, model farms established for training, and partnerships forged with research institutions and development organizations. Agricultural officers affirm they have never witnessed farming on this scale in the LGA before, expressing pride in being part of a transformation that promises lasting impact.
A Future of Abundance and Hope
Mayor Enwereuzo sums up his vision with a simple truth: “For any society to grow economically, the people need to be productive.” His agricultural revolution reflects this philosophy — planting not only crops but also hope, dignity, and a future where Umuahia South stands tall as a producer and supplier, not just a consumer.
From food on the table to jobs in the community, from wealth creation to industrial opportunities, the benefits of this movement are already visible. In the coming years, Umuahia South is set to become a model of how agriculture can transform local economies, restore self-reliance, and fuel prosperity for generations.
