Toyota just dropped the next chapter of a legend.
On May 28, 2026, Toyota Motor Corporation launched a completely redesigned Hilux in Japan. It’s been 58 years since the first Hilux rolled out in 1968. Since then, it’s backed people’s work and adventures in over 190 countries. Now Japan gets a Hilux built for today’s lifestyle.
Built on Hilux DNA, tuned for now
Toyota calls it QDR — Quality, Durability, Reliability. That’s still the core. But this new Hilux adds modern comfort, tech, and safety so it fits daily commutes, job sites, and weekend trails.
Under the hood is the 1GD 2.8-liter diesel engine. It’s known for torque, toughness, and long life. Paired with a 6-speed Super ECT automatic, it delivers strong takeoff power while keeping the cabin quiet.
Cyber SUMO design with real utility
The new look takes inspiration from the first charge in sumo — stable, powerful, ready to push. Sharp fender lines, bold grille, and a planted stance give it presence.
Two grades launch in Japan: Z and Z Adventure. The Z Adventure adds a tough front lower bumper garnish and a sports bar for a more aggressive stance. Inside, you get a horizontal dash for better off-road visibility, a 12.3-inch center display, and controls separated for less distraction.
Utility you can actually use
This is still a proper pickup. 5,325mm long, 1,885mm wide, with a separate deck. Cargo capacity up to 500kg. Deck height is 845mm when the tailgate’s down, plus built-in steps on the rear quarter panels so loading gear is easier.
Whether it’s tools for work or camping gear for the weekend, the flat floor and smart deck design make it ready.
Comfort on road, capability off it
Toyota kept the ladder-frame chassis from the IMV platform but stiffened it. More spot welds on the floor cut vibration and noise. Electric power steering improves low-speed control and reduces kickback on rough trails.
Standard part-time 4WD plus Multi-Terrain Select means you can dial in power and brakes for sand, mud, or rocks. Electric parking brake with stop-hold function also makes traffic jams less painful.
Safety and tech that keep up
Toyota Safety Sense is upgraded. New features include Proactive Driving Assist for steering and braking support, and a Pre-Collision System that watches for oncoming cars and pedestrians at intersections.
Inside, Display Audio Plus with 12.3-inch HD display runs Connected Navigation using live maps and traffic. DCM keeps it online, and Help Net auto-calls an operator if airbags deploy. Toyota says it’ll keep adding features through software updates.
Japan launch details
Base sales target: 690 units.
Grade Z starts at 4,980,800 JPY including tax.
Z Adventure is 5,500,000 JPY with the photospec look, options extra. Prices don’t include recycling fees. Okinawa pricing is separate.
Dealer options focus on the deck — so you can customize for family trips, work, or overlanding.
