Super Eagles Secure Narrow Victory in Uyo
Nigeria revived their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
New Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare was the hero of the night, scoring the decisive goal just six minutes into the second half to hand the Super Eagles a much-needed lifeline.

The result lifted Nigeria to third place in Group C, leapfrogging Rwanda and closing the gap to leaders South Africa, who remain six points ahead.
With only the group winners guaranteed an automatic ticket to the finals, Nigeria’s next clash against Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein will be crucial.
FIFA is yet to rule on a case involving South Africa, who may face a three-point deduction for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho. Such a decision could further boost Nigeria’s chances of topping the group.
Failing that, the Super Eagles could still qualify via the African play-offs as one of the four best second-placed teams.
Arokodare Steps Up as Super Sub
Nigeria’s campaign has been inconsistent, marked by three different managers and only one win in their first six qualifiers. Current boss Eric Chelle, appointed in January, has steadied the team but still faces a tough task.
Against Rwanda, Nigeria thought they had gone ahead early when Victor Osimhen tapped in from close range, only for the goal to be ruled offside. Worse still, the talisman limped off in the 34th minute with a leg injury, leaving fans anxious about his availability for the next match.
The breakthrough eventually came from Tolu Arokodare, who came off the bench at half-time. After an initial effort was blocked and Ola Aina’s shot was parried, Arokodare pounced on the rebound and fired into the net from close range.
Missed Chances and Nwabali’s Safe Hands
Nigeria created further opportunities, with Moses Simon and Ademola Lookman both denied by Rwanda’s goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, who pulled off an impressive double save.
At the other end, the visitors threatened briefly, but Calvin Bassey’s crucial block and a calm save from Stanley Nwabali ensured Nigeria held on for three vital points.

The focus now shifts to Tuesday’s must-win game against South Africa in Bloemfontein. With Osimhen a doubt due to injury, Arokodare may have earned himself a starting spot after his match-winning performance.
