The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering accessible, affordable and quality healthcare services as renovation and upgrade works at the Obingwa General Hospital, Mgboko, approach completion.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, made the disclosure during a pre-completion inspection of the facility, describing the hospital as one of several general hospitals undergoing extensive renovation across the state under the current administration.
According to him, the inspection was aimed at assessing the level of work completed and ensuring that the project aligns with the vision and directives of Governor Alex Otti.
Prof. Uche expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that the installation of medical equipment has already commenced, with several critical items already delivered to the facility.
He explained that once commissioned, the hospital will serve as a major referral centre for primary healthcare facilities within Obingwa Local Government Area and neighbouring communities, including parts of Aba.
The commissioner said the upgraded hospital is designed to handle complicated pregnancies, surgical procedures, childhood illnesses and other medical conditions requiring specialist care beyond the capacity of primary healthcare centres.
He disclosed that the facility will feature a fully equipped surgical theatre, eye clinic, dental clinic, modern laboratory, radiology and ultrasound units, delivery suites, male, female and children’s wards, nutrition clinic, accident and emergency unit, ambulance services and amenity wards.
In addition to healthcare services, the hospital also provides residential accommodation for doctors and nurses, a reliable water supply system and stable electricity infrastructure to support uninterrupted medical services.
Prof. Uche noted that the project forms part of the state’s comprehensive healthcare transformation programme, which is being implemented across all parts of Abia to ensure equitable access to quality medical care.
Also speaking during the inspection, the Chief Executive Officer of the Abia State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Odochi Azubuike, said the visit was necessary to ensure that every aspect of the project meets the required standards before commissioning.
She described the renovation as a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare sector, adding that the project reflects Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical services.
Dr. Azubuike expressed confidence that residents would soon begin to benefit from the administration’s investments in the health sector, noting that the government remains focused on delivering modern healthcare facilities capable of meeting the needs of communities across Abia State.
