Onanuga Defends Tinubu, Says Hunger Narrative Is Exaggerated

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has challenged claims that widespread hunger accurately reflects the situation across Nigeria, insisting that many citizens are benefiting from policies and programmes introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Onanuga argued that ongoing government interventions in infrastructure, education, and access to credit have positively impacted millions of Nigerians.

According to him, recent investments in road infrastructure have improved transportation and reduced travel times in several parts of the country. He cited his personal experience while travelling from Ibadan to Lagos through the Ijebu-Ode route, describing the newly constructed concrete road as evidence of government efforts to improve connectivity and ease movement.

He also highlighted the impact of the ongoing Coastal Highway project, noting that residents along the Lagos corridor are already experiencing shorter travel times and improved road conditions.

Beyond infrastructure, Onanuga pointed to the Federal Government’s student loan programme as one of the administration’s key achievements. He noted that the initiative is helping families with children in tertiary institutions access interest-free educational financing, reducing the financial burden on parents and guardians.

The presidential aide further referenced low-interest credit facilities available to civil servants, describing them as practical measures designed to improve the welfare of workers and support economic stability.

While acknowledging that economic challenges exist, Onanuga maintained that public discussions often overlook the benefits being delivered through government programmes.

He recalled how narratives about widespread hunger gained traction early in the administration and suggested that some public perceptions may not fully reflect the experiences of all Nigerians.

According to him, his interactions with workers and people around him indicate that many citizens are adapting to current economic realities while taking advantage of opportunities created through government initiatives.

Onanuga stressed that the administration remains focused on delivering projects and policies aimed at improving living standards, expanding economic opportunities, and supporting long-term national development.
