Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, citing what he described as a monumental failure in governance and worsening conditions across the country.
Obi made the call in a statement shared on his social media platform, where he reflected on the reported resignation announcement of Keir Starmer and the role of accountability in public leadership.
Obi Highlights Leadership Accountability
According to Obi, leaders must be held accountable for their performance, especially when campaign promises remain unfulfilled and citizens continue to face hardship.
He argued that public office should be viewed as a trust rather than an entitlement, stressing that democratic societies thrive when leaders take responsibility for their actions and decisions.
Reference to Past Criticism of Jonathan
The former Anambra State governor recalled that before 2015, President Tinubu had repeatedly criticized the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic challenges.
Obi noted that Tinubu had previously called for Jonathan’s resignation during periods of heightened insecurity, particularly following the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, arguing at the time that government had failed in its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property.
Concerns Over Current Conditions
Obi expressed concern that conditions in Nigeria have deteriorated since Tinubu assumed office, pointing to challenges in electricity supply, security, infrastructure, transportation, and economic management.
According to him, insecurity has continued to affect many parts of the country, while rising living costs and economic hardship have placed additional pressure on citizens.
He also referenced campaign promises made by Tinubu during the 2023 elections, particularly commitments relating to electricity, anti-corruption efforts, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.
Call for Resignation
The NDC presidential candidate maintained that the current situation requires accountability at the highest level of government.
He argued that a resignation by the President would help strengthen democratic values and establish a culture where public officials are held responsible for their performance.
Obi stated that such a move would send a strong message that leadership comes with consequences and responsibilities, while helping to build institutions founded on transparency, accountability, and public trust.
Renewed Call for Better Governance
The former governor concluded by emphasizing the need for stronger institutions, responsible leadership, and governance that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.
According to him, building a better Nigeria requires leaders who are willing to accept responsibility for both successes and failures while remaining accountable to the people they serve.
