The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has identified Nigeria’s porous borders as one of the major factors contributing to terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking, and other transnational crimes across the country.
Ribadu made the remarks during the opening of the 15th National Security Seminar held in Abuja, where security experts and policymakers gathered to discuss strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s border security framework.
Border Security Critical to National Stability
The seminar, organized by the Alumni Association of the National Defence College in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser and the National Defence College, focused on the theme: “Strengthening Nigeria’s Border Security Architecture for National Stability.”
Represented by Ambassador Yazid Gbemudu, Director of Policy and Strategy at the Office of the National Security Adviser, Ribadu emphasized that Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national stability are closely tied to the effectiveness of its border management systems.
According to him, while Nigeria’s extensive land and maritime borders offer significant opportunities for trade, regional integration, and economic growth, they also present serious security challenges.
Rising Threats Along Nigeria’s Borders
The NSA noted that weak border governance has created vulnerabilities that criminal and terrorist groups continue to exploit.
He identified terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking, irregular migration, and organized transnational crime as some of the major threats confronting the nation.
According to Ribadu, these security challenges require urgent and coordinated responses from relevant agencies and stakeholders.
He warned that failure to strengthen border controls could undermine national security efforts and slow down development across the country.
Border Management Strategy Remains Key
Ribadu highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s National Border Management Strategy, describing it as a central component of the country’s security architecture.
The strategy promotes an integrated border management system aimed at improving intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, surveillance, and operational efficiency.
He explained that the initiative is designed to enhance border infrastructure, strengthen monitoring capabilities, and modernize border control processes nationwide.
Technology Improving Border Monitoring
The NSA also pointed to ongoing efforts to deploy modern technology in managing Nigeria’s borders.
According to him, the introduction of Border Management Information Systems and other digital solutions at major entry and exit points has improved data collection, traveller screening, and migration monitoring.
He stressed that technology-driven security measures remain essential in tackling evolving threats and improving overall border governance.
Call for Greater Collaboration
Ribadu urged security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies to strengthen coordination and information sharing.
He advocated the full implementation of an integrated border management system that would promote joint operations, intelligence exchange, and harmonized border procedures.
According to him, effective collaboration among agencies is necessary to address the increasingly sophisticated nature of contemporary security threats.
Investment in Modern Security Solutions
The National Security Adviser also called for increased investment in advanced security technologies.
He recommended wider deployment of biometric identification systems, surveillance equipment, and data-driven security frameworks to improve monitoring and enforcement capabilities.
Such investments, he noted, would help authorities detect threats more effectively and improve responses to criminal activities along the nation’s borders.
Importance of Regional Cooperation
Recognizing the transnational nature of many security challenges, Ribadu stressed the need for stronger cooperation with neighbouring countries.
He explained that crimes such as arms trafficking, human trafficking, and terrorism often transcend national boundaries and therefore require collaborative regional responses.
According to him, deeper bilateral and multilateral partnerships are essential for achieving long-term border security and regional stability.
Developing Border Communities
Beyond security measures, Ribadu emphasized the importance of investing in border communities.
He noted that sustainable development, improved infrastructure, access to economic opportunities, and better public services can reduce vulnerability to criminal exploitation.
According to him, empowering communities along Nigeria’s borders is a critical component of any lasting security strategy.

The seminar brought together military officers, diplomats, academics, security professionals, policymakers, and other stakeholders to deliberate on practical measures for improving Nigeria’s border security architecture.
