World record holder Tobi Amusan showcased her dominance in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Competing in heat six, the 28-year-old Nigerian clocked 12.53 seconds, finishing ahead of Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton (12.69s) and Italy’s Elena Carraro (12.86s) to secure an automatic spot in Tuesday’s semi-finals.
Despite recording the fifth-best reaction time at the start, Amusan quickly took control of the race and maintained her lead to the finish line.
Other notable athletes advancing to the semi-finals include Olympic champion Masai Russell (USA), reigning world champion Danielle Williams (Jamaica), Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser, as well as Ackera Nugent and Grace Stark.
In other events, Nigeria’s Sade Olatoye competed in the women’s hammer throw but did not advance to the final, recording a best throw of 68.82 meters.
Later on Sunday, Nigerian sprinters Kanyinsola Ajayi and Israel Okon are set to compete in the men’s 100m semi-finals and final, respectively.
